At first glance, a snail’s life appears very simple and peaceful. A tiny creature that carries its home on its back and is in no rush to go anywhere… Yet, if we delve deeper into their world, we discover that the daily life of a snail is fascinating, structured, and full of surprises!
Many people do not realize that snails are highly sensitive creatures whose lives depend heavily on their environment. Their daily routine is entirely dictated by humidity and temperature. For instance, during hot, dry weather, they retreat into their shells, seal the opening with a small “door” (the operculum), and enter a special state of dormancy to conserve moisture. Conversely, after the rain or on a cool evening, the farm comes to life!
At our farm in Akhaltsikhe – where we have created an ideal, eco-friendly microclimate for the snails – observing them is a true delight.
How do these little inhabitants live?
Feeding and Growth: The snail is a true gourmet! They feed on special natural vegetation and a diet rich in vitamins. Interestingly, they possess thousands of microscopic “teeth” (the radula) used to grind their food.
A Gentle Pace: A snail moves at a speed of just a few millimeters per second. This slow, deliberate movement reminds us of the importance of pausing, observing, and savoring the process.
A Nurturing Environment: On the farm, they thrive in a healthy setting that closely mimics their natural habitat, with special attention paid to every stage of their development – from egg-laying to adulthood.
Observing the lives of snails is more than just a biological study; it is a journey of discovery. That is why, during tours of the “Escargot” farm, our guests show such keen interest in learning the secrets behind the care and breeding of these fascinating creatures.
If you would like to explore this tiny world and witness firsthand how this premium Georgian delicacy is produced, we look forward to welcoming you to Akhaltsikhe!
